My main interests are Garmin Nuvi 750, 660 or Magellan Maestro 4250. I haven’t heard great things about the tomtom GO 720, but it’s still a possibility.
What should I get and why?

I own a Magellan Maestro 4000…I love it! It has the large screen, and gives the verbal directions as you go. Easy to see, and use. I got mine on e-bay…if you’re patient, you can get one at a good price there.

Wide and way cool, nüvi 200W shows you the way with detailed maps on a bright widescreen display and clear, voice-prompted directions. This sleek, stylish navigator comes with preloaded maps for the continental U.S., Hawaii and Puerto Rico or regional coverage in other areas. Like the rest of the affordable nüvi 200-series, you?re just a few screen taps away from anywhere.

we bought a garmin last summer; i do not remember the number of it, but it was the less expensive one ($350) and it works fine for us.
tomtom makes some good ones for motorcycles.
try consumer reports or yahoo shopping to compare some of them on features and price.

The Garmin is the best. It is really easy to use. There is nothing really about accuracy with these things. All navigation systems are hooked up to the same satellite, it is just which one is the most straight-forward are it’s simplicity.

Today’s GPS units all work fairly well. The biggest difference used to be the maps, but even the maps are similar. User configurabilty and map update costs are important considerations. Most have internal batteries that last 2 to 8 hours and can be recharging (via the cigarette lighter socket) or a usb cable.
I like the TomTom One. The USA unit includes maps of US & Canada. In the box you will find a usb cable, a cigarette socket cable, and a suction cup mount for vehicle mounting. The box also includes an adhesive surface mount pad if you do not wish to locate the unit on the windshield in plain sight.
Are you interested in using your gps (for free) to detect traffic cameras? See how my $2000 Acura system compared to the inexpensive TomTom One 3rd Edition (look for poi file on page):
Note: Alpine produces a unit similar to the Acura Navi that you can install in your car. Blaupunkt TravelPilot is also an interesting option.

I have heard that TomTom Customer service is non-existant and they don’t respond to emails or phone calls.. I think only snail-mail.. or they take months to respond. Plus I have heard that updating the maps is a pain or they don’t have new maps.
I have the Garmin 660 I think it’s amazing.. I bought it from amazon I couldn’t believe they had it like $400 off and I got it for the same price as the lower low models ..
