How do you update the directory on a Garmin GPS?

My mom got me a GPS for Xmas and I was really excited that you didn’t have to bring addresses with you to put into the Garmin, you could just search for the business (Target, Chick-fil-a, etc.) However, a lot of business that are newer (5 years or so) are not in it. Can you update it somehow?
Isn’t it weird that we bought it this Xmas and buildings from 5 years ago aren’t on it? It’s like buying a computer and seeing WindowsME. It’s like wt*?

Yes. Pay $70 for the software at radioshack.

Garmin releases new updates every year. Some units allow for ONE free update, visit to see if your unit qualifies.
If not, it costs money to update the maps and directory information (called Points of Interest or POI).
