how do I adjust the squelch on a garmin 430?

We have a Garmin 430/530 stack in our aircraft. All in all, we love what they’ve done for Comm/Nav and GPS functions. We’ve had no complaints with either unit or the 330 transponder.
I don’t know of any way to adjust the squelch sensitivity of the units. The manual states that it is “automatic squelch”, which you can disable, as you’ve stated, by pushing the volume knob.
There’s nothing else in the manual about it.
Our Garmins were at least as sensitive as the Bendix-Kings that they replaced. In most cases, we have gotten better reception range with the Garmin.
I would check the antenna, coax cable, connectors, grounding of all items and etc if you haven’t already done that.
If all seems well with that and the unit seems to have abnormally low reception, I would refer the problem to Garmin for testing or replacement of the unit itself. Perhaps they, or a local Garmin dealer, can provide a loaner to swap into the aircraft to compare with.
Wish I could help more than that.

pull the unit and get it benched. King radios are set on the testbench.
